VAL News

Posted in: Newsletters

Can you believe it was only 12 weeks ago that we were all wearing sunscreen and hats at the Stawell Gift, and enjoying the very hot Easter weather?! With the cold weather we are having now, it feels like a lifetime ago. This newsletter is short and contains some important information about the 2021/2022 calendar and the meeting link for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) which you are all welcome to attend. Also below is some information about some new officials joining the VAL team. A lot of planning and effort goes into making the season successful and I am thankful to the incoming people for offering their time. Finally – the Olympics is almost here and I wanted to do a massive shout out to Hana Basic and long time pro running supporters, Kendra Hubbard and coach John Nicolosi. Congratulations on making the Olympic team! Stay warm everyone and keep training.

A full season is on the horizon as we welcome back several clubs that were affected by the pandemic.

The Beachside Gift (formerly Parkdale) is moving an amazing new venue. Stay tuned!

Sadly, we received news that the Daylesford meeting will not be proceeding. We are so thankful to Adrian and the Tinetti family for their enormous contribution over the years in establishing such a wonderful day. The Daylesford Gift will be missed by many.

The draft calendar will be approved by member clubs at the Annual General meeting on July 25th.

2021/22 OFFICIALS

A big thank you to Brian Marantelli and Chris Brown as they finish up after many years dedicated to stewarding and handicapping with the VAL. The commitment to their roles was always dynamic and highly spirited. Thank you!

The 21-22 season will see a reinvigorated ensemble of officials with some familiar faces joining the team. These strategic placements will help spread the load of volunteers, reduce the risk for the league, and assist with succession planning for retaining and recruiting officials.

Obtaining officials is an ongoing challenge for the league every season, so please give them a warm welcome. And remember, they are volunteering their time so participants can do what they do best... Participate!

Conflicts of Interest
The history of pro running has seen almost every official and volunteer come from within the sport. At times, this can create actual or perceived conflicts of interest. The VAL is implementing a new Conflict of Interest policy for all officials and VAL personnel.

The past 12 months has sadly seen the passing of some of the sports most dedicated contributors. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of these amazing people.
