June 2019 Newsletter

Posted in: Newsletters

It feels very much like winter and despite the winter solstice having just passed it seems like there will be a long cold winter (training) ahead. I was walking around the tan the other night and was pleased to see the cold weather didn't deter athletes from getting out and working hard.

Get out your diaries because in this (winter edition) newsletter we have provided the 2019-20 season fixture. We are hoping to partner with the SAAL to see the return of the Mt Gambier meeting and a few other meets have swapped dates, so be sure to read it carefully.

For those who haven't heard, the Stawell Gift was one of 11 locations (world-wide) to receive IAAF recognition in receiving a world athletics heritage plaque. This is fantastic and a testament to the unique event we all love at Easter - the full article is contained within.

The VAL office is still 'open for business' during the winter, so please do not hesitate to get in contact with either Tom or myself. You can contact me directly on
Until next time, train hard, stay warm.

Last season, the VAL sought feedback on a number of things, including the strategic plan, to ensure we continue to provide what is best for all our stakeholders.

You told us that you wanted:

  • Introductory and mentoring measures put in place for new and junior athletes
  • Equitable and transparent handicapping systems
  • Greater collaboration with Athletics Victoria
  • Prize money equality
  • Greater recruitment through amateur clubs, schools and school competitions

We have added all of the above to our strategic plan and look forward to working towards success in these areas in the coming years.

A big thank you to those that contributed, your feedback was greatly appreciated.

The VAL prioritise feedback received via email or phone, so to ensure any feedback you wish to provide is received, please contact Tom or Stephanie directly. The VAL does not prioritise comments and opinions that are made outside the official communication channels (ie external social media channels).

Due to council and club requirements, there have been a number of changes to the fixture for next season. These changes are the result of clubs needing to working with councils, other sporting associations and ground availability.

Note, Frankston is being considered for a Friday night event on 28 February but is yet to be confirmed.
Daylesford will be Sunday 5 January (not Sat 4th as below).
We are also hoping to work together with the SAAL to bring back the Mt Gambier Gift in November. Stay tuned.

The VAL are seeking someone to assist in the design and manufacturing of a number of projects including new finish gates. If you or someone you know is interested, or if you have an alternative idea, please email or call (03) 8646 4545 during business hours.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe has announced that the Stawell Gift is among 11 new locations for the IAAF World Athletics Heritage Plaque at an official ceremony in Yokohama, Japan on the eve of the IAAF World Relays.

“The eleven recipients we honour have each made an enormous impact in the historical development of the sport of athletics in their countries and beyond,” said Sebastian Coe. “The IAAF launched this new award last December and a public competition has since designed the plaque. Next year we will begin to unveil the plaques, permanent reminders of outstanding historic athletic achievement, in prominent locations around the world.”

ASADA has released a great new resource for parents, teachers and coaches to help children achieve their sporting goals and also in protecting them from the potential pitfalls of doping.
The Parents’ Guide to Clean Sport is available both as a brochure and as a short 15-20min online course, and covers topics such as healthy sport cultures, nutrition, the risks of supplements and doping risk factors, and includes links to websites for further useful information.
Links to both can be found on the ASADA website HERE.

The VAL office will be closed from Tuesday 5 June and will re-open on Thursday 4 July. All urgent inquiries please email
