Proud new naming for Terang 300m Women’s and Masters Handicap

The Terang Athletic Club are delighted to conduct the 12th staging of the Terang Gift carnival on Sunday 2nd December, 2018. The Terang Gift is the major athletic event for our community-based club, and it is our pleasure to host the cream of athletes from Victoria and other states.

Building on the success of being named the ‘Meeting of the Year’’ last season by the VRTA, we have named the Women’s and Masters 300m Handicap after one of our club’s founding members Richard Wearmouth.

Richard rightly joins our 5 Terang and District Greats who have races named after them – runners who have been significant in Terang’s running history for over 90 years- Roy Northeast, Jack McCunnie, Laurie Heffernan, Tony Arundell and Jill McKenzie.

Richard was a founding member of the Terang Athletic Club and has been an amazing coach and mentor to Terang and District athletes for many, many years. Richard’s enthusiasm and energy during both our track and cross-country seasons was responsible for the strength that the club and community appreciate today. Richard worked tirelessly for our club and community, not only in the athletics scene. Initially the Terang Athletic Club ran ‘picnic meetings’ before joining the VAL 12 years ago and building our carnival into the highly respected one athletes enjoy today- this was all due to Richard’s foresight and passion.

Richard is no slouch at racing himself and has enjoyed masters running and had success at events like the Australian, Australasian, Pan Pacific and Oceana Masters athletics. This gave him the impetus to become involved in running in the VAL again and returned after a hiatus of thirty-six years. Richard has had some victories in 120m and 300m events and counts the Ballarat double in 2015 as his most satisfying success. More than anything Richard loves being surrounded by fit people.

Richard is highly respected and has made many friendships through running and the Terang Athletic Club are proud to announce the naming of the Richard Wearmouth 300m Women’s and Masters Handicap.
