General comments.
Finishing recording machine lost power during heats of the 70m, resulting in a delay of 1 hour. Graeme Smith’s system (previous system) was used for rest of the carnival.
The VAL stewards and handicappers were disappointed with the performances of the majority of finalists in the open and Women’s 400m finals. It was thought that there was a general lack of endeavour, tactical know how and determination in both events. The performances of these athletes, leading up to and including the Bendigo 400s, will be closely monitored and any sharp improvement will be scrutinised.
Notes
(1) After the heats of the women’s 120m Gift, Jenna Cartledge was queried regarding her loss of form compared to the previous week at Ballarat. She was disappointed and at a loss to explain the time difference.
(2) Robert Keenan was queried after his run in the heat of the 800m. He and coach Brad Armstrong were both disappointed in the run and believed it most likely a result of recent hard racing which included a trip to Adelaide for the Camden Classic.
(3) Stephanie Jinks was queried regarding her second place in the women’s 400m final. Steward’s believed that Stephanie’s run was below what should be expected, especially in the home straight.
(4) Simon Fitzpatrick was unable to take his place in the Keilor Gift semi finals and will be unable to compete with the VAL for 28 days, 14 days with an acceptable certificate.
(5) Emma Gaul pulled out mid race in the final of the 300m. Emma will be unable to compete with the VAL for 28 days, 14 days with an acceptable certificate.
(6) In the 300m final Kerrie-Anne Hocking stumbled as the gun was fired whilst attempting to halt the start.
